Hey guys, Abbie here. I just thought that I would try out writing a review about something. I've chosen Doctor Who as Monday was it's 52nd anniversary. I did write a whole review on the series Monday for the special day, but the computer decided to crash and I lost all of my review, so, apologies if this isn't very good (it's just my opinion on the series) and apologies for my English! But here we go!
The first episode of the series was called "The Magician's Apprentice" and it started off with a little boy on a battlefield - this little boy turns out to be Davros. Dun dun daaa! Missy also features in this episode and I love her craziness and she is played really well by Michelle Gomez - there is something about Missy that I don't like though, but I'm not sure as to what it is... Maybe it's the fact she is kind of a bad guy? Anyway, we also encounter Davros's assistant called Colony Sarff - he is quite peculiar! I do like the way he moves around though! And then of course we have the Doctor. I'm loving the addition of the electric guitar, but I'm still not quite sure as to whether I like 12 or not. Capaldi is a great actor, but I feel that he is copying other Doctor's too much and not incorporating many of his own bits. It still seems that the writing is based for Matt Smith's doctor with all the mannerisms, and it doesn't quite suit Capaldi's doctor. Clara and Missy's team up was quite fun until they got exterminated... And of course the Doctor wants revenge mwhahahahaha! So the episode ends with the Doctor holding some sort of gun at young Davros... cue next episode!
So this was a two parter episode (there seems to be an awful lot of two parter episodes this series!) and because I have watched a lot of Doctor Who I was able to predict that Clara and Missy weren't dead as I remembered about the vortex manipulator! Who knew it was that easy to kill a Dalek? It was interesting to see them put Clara inside a Dalek and with the whole Davros regeneration energy thing, I'm sure Admiral Ackbar was screaming "it's a trap" at the screen! Missy's evil nature shines through when she tries to get the Doctor to kill Clara, and once Clara is saved it seems that it is foreshadowing her leaving this series... How many times can we put her in grave danger this series? The Doctor reveals to us his sonic sunglasses - Sonic sunglasses? Really? Sure it's an interesting concept, but we've had the screwdriver for so long and I don't think they suit the character! So anyway, once again the Doctor saves the day as we see him walk off with young Davros!
The next episode was called "Under the Lake". I quite enjoyed this set of episodes and I totally shipped O'Donnell and Bennett and Cass and Lunn! Seeing Colin McFarlane and knowing that Rufus Hound was going to feature in Doctor Who soon just made me think of the CBBC show "Hounded" (I loved Hounded! Don't judge!) It was nice to see that Doctor Who included their first ever deaf actor on the show as I'm sure it was very inspiring for all the young deaf people out there who watch the show. Ghosts were an unusual choice to have on Doctor Who, but those eyes! They stared deep down into my soul! The episode finished with the Doctor being separated from Clara and then we see that the Doctor is a ghost! Ahhhhh!
"Before the Flood" started with the Doctor talking about Beethoven and the Bootstrap Paradox - this really confused me, but I did LOVE the electric guitar opening titles! Play it again! Play it again! The Tivolian, Prentis was played by the same guy who was the crazy gadget guy in Agent Cody Banks 2! AND they used the tallest guy in Britain to play the part of the Fisher King! Sadly O'Donnell dies - at least one of my ships survived! Cue the song "I will go down with this ship" Thanks Dido! The Doctor confronts the Fisher King and then the dam goes boom! I feel very satisfied with myself when I work stuff out! This time I figured out that the Doctor was just a projection. The episode then ends with the confusing paradox thing again!
Next we had the episode "The Girl Who Died". Ah! The return of the orange space suit! I bet you were all hoping that this was the end of the sonic sunglasses. I enjoyed how they proved that brain is more powerful with brawn! Ashildr is a weird character... That is one eloquently speaking baby! Another thing that I enjoyed about this episode was the whole training sequence adding some humour to war, and followed by the comical Mire invasion. The Doctor then has his flashback to Caecilius. I suppose it was clever in a way, but I think it wasn't really necessary at all. They could of just left it as it was. They didn't explain the multiple appearances of Karen Gillan and Colin Baker for example! Ashildr is then turned into a hybrid and realises everyone she knows is going to die. No surprise this episode was written by Moffat!
"The Woman Who Lived" was a bit of an unusual episode. I feel like they dragged it on a bit, and it could of been condensed into like 15 minutes! Why would you change your name to Me? The diaries was a nice touch and the lion hidden in the garden reminded me of Prince John from Disney's version of Robin Hood - all he needed to do was start sucking his thumb! So then they try to kill Rufus Hound but the Doctor helps Me realise that the lion is a bad guy and they save Rufus using the other chip. Me then talks to the Doctor and says she will be a good girl from now on. Or will she...
"The Zygon Invasion" - Are you a Zygon? We then discover that there is another Osgood, but we don't know as to whether she is human or Zygon. Which one do you think she is? I liked that we revisited some of the characters from the 50th anniversary episode as I enjoyed that episode and it reminds me of my favourite Doctor - Matt Smith! Clara isn't Clara! It's Bonnie! Why did they have to kill Jac? The Doctor is flying off in a plane with Osgood and then Bonnie whips out her gun and the episode ends with the gun poised to fire at the plane! *Gasp*
The suspense is kind of ruined because if you wait just a bit after the episode is finished it says next time and then it shows you clips from next weeks episode. So basically the cliff hanger is a cliff hanger for 2 seconds because you shortly afterwards see that the Doctor survives! Oh well! At least we don't have that eating away at us for the rest of the week! In "The Zygon Inversion" we see that Bonnie misses the shot because Clara moved her TV screen! I can understand how Clara communicates with Bonnie, but how does Bonnie respond to Clara's facial expressions? She is just staring at Clara's face in the pod! If someone walked in on Bonnie they might think she's a bit weird! Somehow Bonnie can hear what Clara is saying too - maybe this is a telepathic link? I'm loving the Doctor's parachute! (It reminds me of Gavin in the GTA V Let's Plays!) So after all the other bit and pieces in the episode we end up with the Osgood boxes in the UNIT Black Archive's. Truth or consequences? Luckily the Doctor saves the day by talking his way out of it and no one pushes anymore buttons in the boxes - there has to be something in the boxes right?! I think Osgood would of been quite a good companion, on the other hand, she does need an inhaler and there is a whole lot of running! But she could be the tech guy - but would the Doctor really need one of those? Maybe it's best she stays with the other Osgood after all!
The next episode is called "Sleep No More". Once again I was quite confused by this episode! Forgive me Whovians! This episode is set on a 38th century space station and we get to meet the four person rescue team - I like that at the beginning they show you their survival rating so you already know which one is going to die first! On this space station are some pods which help reduce the amount a person sleeps created by this dude called Rassmussen. These pods mutate your sleep dust to create these monsters - seems quite creepy. Then we find out that Rassmussen is working with the sandmen and that he himself is one which we see when he has his little monologue with the camera - this bit was super creepy for me because as he said "you have something in the corner of your eye" I was cleaning the corner of my eye!! #2spooky Thanks for that Gatiss. I know the Doctor left the space station as it was crashing into Neptune, but it looked to me like he was just running away! He didn't exactly save many people - if he wasn't there it probably would of panned out the same.
And then finally we have "Face the Raven". Rigsy contacts Clara and tells her about this mysterious tattoo that has appeared on the back of his neck. Firstly, if this is a timer, why is it on the back of your neck where you can't see it? Surely a person's forearm should be more appropriate - or maybe the fact that they can't see the timer is the whole point? To then try and save Rigsy from this countdown they look around London, which was quite entertaining to watch. And we were all lucky as we get to meet the much loved Me again. Joy. Clara tries to be like the Doctor and be brave and save the life of someone, but in doing so, she seals her own fate. Oops. I know it may seem dark, but it would of been nice if there was an actual murder and the Doctor had to go all Sherlock and solve the mystery. (You can still make this happen Moffat and Gatiss!) In "The Woman Who Lived" Ashildr said she was going to be good right? Well, that lasted. Clara then has her whole speech which was quite nice and then she is taken by the Raven. Bye Clara. I have mixed feelings about her leaving. However, if you are subscribed to the Official Doctor Who Magazine, like me, there is a picture of Clara on the cover of the latest issue wearing an American Diner waitress outfit... So is she really dead, or is this another version of Clara from when she went into the Doctor's timeline?...
The next episode coming out on Saturday is called "Heaven Sent" where we just have the Doctor doing his thing - it's basically like a giant monologue apparently. The following episode is said to be partially linked and called "Hell Bent" - could this be the episode where the Doctor goes to the American Diner?
